Hermès Birkin Bag: Would you customize it?

Frenchionista Hermes

I posted a picture on my Instagram page a few weeks ago of a customized white Hermès Birkin bag. I found the art on it pretty amazingly special! Little did I know (although I really should have known better) that this bag belongs to the one and only Lady Gaga! I must say that it is such a Gaga thing to do, and kudos to that as I think the result is great.

A few weeks later, one of the most followed people on Instagram – yes, yes it’s Kim Kardashian of course – also posted a strange picture of another Hermès Birkin bag. The feeling that I got when I looked at it wasn’t exactly the same as I had for the Gaga’s customized Birkin. It was George Condo, incidentally, who painted Kanye West’s Christmas gift to Kim: a Hermès Birkin bag featuring three voluptuous nude women –maybe they were supposed to be the Kardashian sisters, who knows!-  and an angry green monster (Kris Jenner !?). We will never know what Kim genuinely thought about the gift but the Instagram community did not approve. “This shit is ugly”, read one typical comment (and I’m really sparing you the worst!).

So there was me thinking… is it that much of a fashion crime to get creative with such an expensive and legendary bag? The prices range from $7400 to $150,000 and there is a very long waiting list for buying the precious item.

If I had one, I don’t think I would want to start drawing on it as every inch of the bag would represent days and days of hard work and sweat. Yet if you have the means to buy dozens of Birkin, why not get creative with some of them?

Besides, have you ever come across a woman carrying a Birkin? There are plenty in London and they are usually associated with super wealthy women who look perfectly put together even on their way to pilates! I think the typical Hermès customer has also perhaps turned the bag into a glaring sign of wealth which is not so fashionable anymore (no pun intended).

I think it’s time to demystify luxury brands and unleash our creative potential! Maybe I’ll give it a try tonight with one of my Topshop bags 😉

Lady Gaga White customized hermes bag photo

Lady Gaga’s very own White Hermès Birkin Bag- before and after!

Nicola Formichetti is the former creative director of the French fashion house Thierry Mugler and has now launched his eponymous womenswear line. He is also the stylist of Lady Gaga. Among his designs, the front of his Birkin reads “This is Nicopanda” and the back says “This bag is not for you“.

Birkin Jane Birkin

In 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. She had just placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment of her seat, but the contents fell to the deck, leaving her to scramble to replace them. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for herbased on an 1892 design. She used the bag for herself then later changed her mind because she was carrying too many things in it: ‘What’s the use of having a second one?’ she laughs. ‘You only need one and that busts your arm; they’re bloody heavy. I’m going to have to have an operation for tendonitis in the shoulder.’Nevertheless, the bag has since become an icon. (Source : Wikipedia)
